With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but to use caution when giving personal information to census workers, so as not to become victims of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census has begun as workers are currently verifying household addresses across the country. Ultimately, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will visit every address in the United States in order to record each person and gather basic information about each person such as name, age, gender, race, and other pertinent information relating to the census. Census workers are currently only verifying address information and are not conducting the Census at this time. The BBB offers the following advice on how to tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist. Please share this information with family and friends: All U.S. Census workers should present an identification badge and have a handheld device along with a Census Bureau canvas bag, and confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and badge before answering any questions. Remember, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home, and are under no obligation to do so. Remember, no matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau. DO NOT GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, CREDIT CARD OR BANKING INFORMATION TO ANYONE, EVEN IF THEY CLAIM THEY NEED IT FOR THE U.S.CENSUS. And remember, the Census Bureau has decided not to work with Acorn on gathering this information; therefore, no Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau. A common Internet scam that results in identity theft is phishing. Phishing is attempting to steal information by using fake Web sites to look legitimate. While you may receive an e-mail from the Census Bureau requesting your participation in a survey, the official 2010 Census will NOT be conducted via e-mail or the Internet. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau. The Census Bureau will not request personal information via the internet, and will not send e-mails requesting personal identification numbers, passwords, social security numbers or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts. For further information regarding the upcoming census, including a link to find out whether e-mails you received are legitimate Census Bureau surveys, visit http://www.census.gov. For more advice on avoiding identity theft and fraud, visit http://www.bbb.org/ and remember to always be cautious to avoid identity theft. [Additional info...]

Main Street will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. alongside of Helen's Gardens for the removal of the Butler Oak Tree. Please keep this in mind when traveling through downtown that morning.
The City of League City is currently in the process of creating a wastewater model of the city.
In order to complete the project surveyors will be gathering data on approximately 750 sanitary sewer manholes. The surveyors will be opening the manholes, which may be located within or adjacent to paved streets. The survey work will be done during March and April. The City apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your patience during this process.
It is with regret that we announce the scheduled removal of one of the Butler Oaks along Main Street
The tree is located in the right-of-way adjacent to Helen’s Gardens (second tree from the corner of Main Street and Kansas). The structurally unstable tree, showing significant decay, poses a public hazard to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The condition of the tree has been assessed and verified by three Certified Arborists, and the tree shows at least 50% decay. Bracing and other tree support systems are not an option because of the sheer weight of the tree; it is estimated to be in excess of 8,000 pounds. We anticipate the removal to occur within the next ten days. The tree will be cut at ground level to mitigate the potential hazard. Since this area is within the TXDOT ROW, any future tree replacements would need to be authorized and coordinated with TXDOT. A large portion of the tree extends over several lanes of Main Street; as a result, traffic will be affected in the work zone. Additionally, crews will perform selective pruning on several large limbs on adjacent trees along the right-of-way at the same time; performing selective pruning of large limbs concurrently will minimize impact on traffic. These large limbs also extend over the street and show signs of decay (i.e. white rot); removal may prevent potential hazards in the future. “League City’s living legacy of beautiful live oak trees began in the 1870’s when George Washington Butler established his ranch headquarters in town, and planted live oak trees around it. Many of these trees are still appreciated today in Helen’s Gardens, at the north end of the 30 acres bordered by Main, Kansas, and Walker Streets, and the GH&H Railroad”—excerpt from Live Oaks of League City

One Night of Madness is the true story of a dark and wicked event in American history. In 1950, Mary Ella Harris, a black mother of five, struggled amid poverty to take care of her rural Mississippi family. Her sharecropper husband drank, gambled, and associated with unsavory white people, one being Leon Turner, a violent ex-convict who desired Mary Ella. The turbulent interaction between Mary Ella and Leon—equally stubborn and strong-willed—yields a story of the hidden South that explodes one night when the madness of one man destroys the lives of many. Stokes McMillan is fourth generation born and raised in Kosciusko, Mississippi, the county seat of Attala County, where the events of One Night of Madness occurred. While writing is his passion, his day job is at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he works for NASA as a Space Shuttle engineer. McMillan lives with his wife in Houston. One Night of Madness is his first book. Helen Hall Library

Crywolf Provides Complete False Alarm Management Solutions Tailored for Individual Communities In most areas of the country, law enforcement resources are unfortunately scarce. When combined with the growing demand for services by individual communities, governments continually ask Agencies to do more with less. In this context, non-critical calls for service, such as false alarms, decrease the amount of time that officers can spend responding to true emergencies and reduce the number of staff that can work proactively to prevent crime. This environment also places officer and public safety at increased risk.
For more than seven years, Crywolf has helped local governments enforce False Alarm Ordinances by providing false alarm management solutions. In every case, Crywolf technology and services have helped these jurisdictions reduce false alarms, increase collections and improve efficiency. Today, Crywolf is the leading provider of false alarm management systems to over 100 cities and counties in 28 states and Canada. Citizens will now have access to online Alarm Permit registration. Once registered, applicants will have the capability to manage their account online, check the status of current registrations, and research false alarm history. [Register...]
