Recently, the League City Traffic Department has been made aware of an increase in traffic on FM 270 due to ongoing construction on I-45 and FM 146. The traffic is being caused by drivers taking FM 270 as an alternate route to avoid construction.
Prior to construction in 2018, crews placed traffic counters at the intersection of FM 270 and FM 96 to prepare for the current construction and sync traffic lights accordingly. To address the current increased congestion, City crews have begun placing traffic counters at the intersection again to make an informed decision before making changes to the current traffic signals.
“Residents currently see long lines of traffic while driving south of FM 270 and when they drive up to FM 96 it’s clear east and west, so they think something is wrong with the timing of that traffic light,” says Public Works Manager David Tickell.
Tickell explains that the lights at FM 96 are synced to prevent gridlock from happening at the intersection and to keep traffic on the main roadways flowing smoothly. Once results from the traffic counters are retrieved, changes will be made to the traffic light timing, if necessary.
