[ARCHIVED] Veterans Buried in League City to be Honored

Wreaths Across America

On Saturday, December 14,  dozens of volunteers will gather at League City’s historic Fairview Cemetery to commemorate fallen veterans by placing wreaths on their graves. National Wreaths Across America Day will be celebrated at 11 a.m.  at the cemetery, 901 N. Kansas. The event will be held rain or shine, and members of the community are encouraged to attend. The event is hosted by the Sam Houston chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

This is the second year the League City cemetery will serve as a site for Wreaths Across America Day. Fairview Cemetery opened in 1900 and is the final resting place for many veterans, including 18 who fought in the Civil War. Union soldiers and Confederates are equally represented. Fairview also contains the graves of 24 known World War I veterans and another 20 who served during World War II.

Volunteers have raised enough money to place wreaths on all 118 of the cemetery’s veterans’ graves. Participants are expected to include veterans, active military service members and their families, and students from the Clear Creek and Dickinson school districts, along with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

The annual event began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992 and has grown to the point where, today, volunteers at more than 1,700 cemeteries place wreaths on the graves of veterans in all 50 states and elsewhere around the world.
