A native Texan, Joanna Sharp Dawson was born in Denton, and grew up in dusty Lubbock, where her father was a printer, coming from a long line of small town Texas newspaper owners.
Joanna had the good fortune after Texas Tech to live in Great Britain for two years, before coming back to Texas permanently.
Moving to League City in 1967, she served as Community Relations Coordinator and Volunteer Director of a local hospital for ten years, which required professional training about working with volunteers.
Her healthcare history led Joanna to become a licensed life and health insurance agent with a very strong emphasis on helping people with their health insurance problems. She has been a self-employed business woman for almost 29 years.
Loving the lush green of League City, Joanna became a Certified Texas Master Naturalist which led her to serve on the City’s Parks Board (for more than five years) for which she was awarded the MN Treasures of the Bay Making a Difference Award in 2008. Through this organization, she has become knowledgeable about Smart Growth.
Joanna is the proud mother of David, a hospital-based pharmacist; Don, a Chemical Engineer employment recruiter, and Karen, a local store owner and businesswoman. Having been a single parent for 37 years, she happily became the bride of James Patrick Dawson, in December of 2009,.
Community volunteering has always been Joanna’s forte, founding and nurturing many organizations, rising to leadership roles in many of them. During her time as Parks Board member, Joanna attended more than 200 Council meetings, workshops, and retreats.
Living near the Historic District, Joanna has a passion for things historical about League City: Main Street, the Butler Oaks, Fairview Cemetery.
Her long term love for League City has now led her to a City Council chair, where her ambition is to serve and improve the quality of life for our citizens, contributing what she has learned.
