Laural Powell


With over 20 years experience in different aspects of the animal welfare profession, Laural brings a life-long love of animals and community to the position of Animal Control Superintendent with League City.  Laural previously served as: the Executive Director of the Palm Valley Animal Center (3 yrs), Supervisor for the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care (A.R.C.) Division (8yrs), the Manager of the Humane Society of Harlingen (7yrs), and as a Vet Tech. at the San Benito Animal Hospital (6yrs).

 

Laural has served as a Board of Director for the Texas Animal Control Association (TACA) from 1999-2005, and the Texas Federation of Humane Societies (TFHS) from 2000-2007. She has served on Advisory Boards for the IAMS Shelters Program, and the Texas Humane Legislative Network (THLN). Laural was also a founding member of the People & Pets Coalition of Cameron County. During her tenure with TACA, Laural has received Presidential Citations each year, the TACA Humane Educator in 1999, and was named TACA Outstanding Professional in 2001.


Overview
Animal Control is a division of the League City Police Department and is responsible for the enforcement of city ordinances and state laws pertaining to animals and fowl.

Animal Control is dedicated to educating/informing the public of their responsibilities to their animals, their neighborhood, and ultimately to their community, then enforcing the ordinances of our city when our education efforts are not enough. Animal Control strives to reduce the dangers and nuisances caused by irresponsible pet ownership and to protect pets from abuse.

Adoptions and Sevices
Cats and dogs are available for adoption during normal shelter business hours.  The fee for adoptions is $75.00. This nominal cost covers sterilization; a rabies shot; a micro chip, and the micro chip registration. Owners are responsible for vet costs. Applications for adoption must be turned in 30 minutes before closing time to allow for processing.

The shelter does not accept unwanted pets.

Services available include adult/junior volunteering, tours and speakers for community organizations or groups.

Helpful Information
  • Your pet is required by law to be vaccinated for rabies. 
  • Pet registration is a requirement for the City of League City.
    • To register your dog or cat, go to the City Animal Shelter, 821 N. Kansas St.
    • You will need to provide a current certification of your pet's vaccination to purchase a City registration.
  • League City has a leash law.
  • Having your pet spayed or neutered can prevent over-population and make your pet healthier.
