AND THE SURVEY SAYS. . .

Heidi Shannon

Mark Linenschmidt

Over the last six weeks, we have conducted a survey asking property owners, businesses and other stakeholders to tell us how the Main Street corridor and Historic District area can be enhanced. We sent 103 e-mail notifications regarding the surveys and 787 surveys to property owners in the study area via mail. We received 80 survey responses for an 11% response rate. Your Guiding Principles

Your responses have helped determine the “Guiding Principles” for the Main Street Strategic Plan. These “Guiding Principles” will establish common ground in preserving and enhancing the target area as we develop the Implementation Plan. In order to determine the “Guiding Principles” from your responses, staff evaluated them for commonality and, in some cases, combined them. Then, we took those that received the highest number of responses.

Main Street should….

1. Foster a source of pride for League City.

Encourage the promotion of historic design, significant landmarks, and the local culture, better reflecting neighborhood pride and the sense that Main Street should serve as a series of unique destinations.

2. Offer places to Live, Work, Shop, Play, and Gather.

Build upon the existing suburban village's distinctive and multifaceted character which includes jobs, housing, and recreation all within a few blocks of each other. Incorporate pedestrian and bicycle friendly amenities that will aid people to move from place to place safely.

3. Provide an exciting, competitive place to open/maintain a business.

Expand on economically marketable themes to have its own niche in the market that is equally exciting and regionally competitive.

4. Incorporate nature to the greatest extent possible.

Take full advantage of the natural environment to connect with natural spaces, initiate better vitality/livability and promote well-being.

5. Establish and maintain sustainable services, facilities and infrastructure.

Adopt sustainable practices that ensure well designed infrastructure and services while respecting existing limitations. Infrastructure, services and facilities include parks, schools, power, communications, water, wastewater, storm drainage, parking and mobility systems, as well as police and fire protection.

Next Steps:

Staff is in the process of organizing a set of workshops designed to solicit your participation with themes, amenities and economic scenarios at build-out under current zoning, existing trends and alternative development patterns.
