Recyclable Items

All League City utility customers can request a recycling bin one of two ways. You can either call Ameriwaste directly and ask them to deliver one or you can pick one up at City Hall. We suggest that you call ahead to ensure that we have some available. Should your recycling bin need to be replaced you can pick up a new one at City Hall.

Designated recycling days are on the recycling routes map available here.

Plastics
How can you tell whether to put a plastic container into your recycling bin? Turn the product over and look for the recycling symbol, a triangle with a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 on the inside.Products labeled with code 6 are prohibited. That number is the "resin identification code," or RIC. Each number represents a different type of plastic, and some are more easily recycled than others..
Note that some products may be packaged with different types of plastic. Beverage bottles, are an example, to maximize recycling remove the caps. Caps are not recyclable.

Do’s
One important thing to keep in mind as you recycle plastics is that cleanliness is essential. One dirty product, or one with food waste still in it, can contaminate an entire bale containing thousands of pounds of collected plastics.

Code 1 - Soft drink, water and salad dressing bottles; peanut butter and jam jars
Code 2 - milk, juice and water bottles; the occasional shampoo / toiletry bottle
Code 3 - Blister packaging for non-food items; cling films for non-food use. Not used for food packaging as the plasticisers needed to make natively rigid PVC flexible are usually toxic. Non-packaging uses are electrical cable insulation; rigid piping; vinyl records.
Code 4 - Frozen food bags; squeezable bottles, e.g. honey, mustard; cling films; flexible container lids
Code 5 - Reusable microwaveable ware; kitchenware; yogurt containers; margarine tubs; microwaveable disposable take-away containers; disposable cups; plates.
Code 7 - Beverage bottles; baby milk bottles. Non-packaging uses for polycarbonate: compact discs; "unbreakable" glazing; electronic apparatus housings; lenses including sunglasses, prescription glasses, automotive headlamps, riot shields, instrument panels

Don’ts
Plastic grocery and produce sacks jam up the equipment used to sort recycled items. These bags are often collected in barrels at grocery stores.
Products labeled with Code 6 are not accepted. Code 6 products include egg cartons, packing peanuts, disposable cups, plates, trays and cutlery and disposable take-away containers

Glass
We DO NOT accept glass of any kind in curbside recycling. Glass creates many serious safety problems during the recycling processes of delivery and sorting. A glass recycling drop off bin is located at the League City Public Works building at 1535 Dickinson Ave. Glass Recycling can be dropped off 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just remember to sort clear and colored glass.

League City Recycling Center
The Vehicle Maintenance Department, located at 1535 Dickinson Avenue, maintains a recycle center where residents can bring their regular recycling, used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, glass (separate your clear and colored), and automotive batteries. The center is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week!

Heavy Trash Pickup

Heavy Trash pickup is the second garbage pickup day for each subdivision.
For example: If your garbage days are Tuesday & Friday. Heavy Trash pickup would be on Friday.

If you’re looking to unload a refrigerator, air conditioner or other cooling device, you’ll have to deal with Freon disposal as well. The item must be tagged by the freon removal company before it will be picked up.

Per our Ameriwaste Contract the following information applies to "Heavy Trash": "Heavy Trash shall mean refuse which is of such size and weight that is cannot be placed into a thirty-two gallon contain, or, if it can be placed in a thirty-two gallon container, its weight exceeds 50 pounds. Heavy trash shall not include items or materials which cannot be safely lifted and placed upon a truck by two men. Heavy trash shall include tree limbs less than 5 feet (5') in length provided the aggregate weight of such tree limbs or lumber does not exceed 300 pounds, and such tree limbs or loose lumber are bundled, and each bundle does not exceed fifty pounds in weight.

In other words:
  • Heavy trash is anything that can not be placed in a 32 gallon container or items whose weight exceeds 50 pounds.
  • If two men can not safely lift it and place it in a truck it can not be left curbside.
  • TREE LIMBS/LUMBER/CLIPPINGS MUST BE:
    • Bundled in bundles that weigh less than fifty pounds each,
    • Must not exceed five feet in length,
    • Total weight of clippings left for one heavy trash pick up must not exceed 300 pounds.
