Ever since she was a little girl, Jasmine O’Keefe has had a passion for animals, but when she isn’t busy running League City Pets Alive Volunteer program, she’s most likely running to train for her first marathon in Disney World next year.
What do you do?
I coordinate volunteers, humane education, dog training, social media, cat training, etc.
The more volunteers we have, the more pets we get out of the shelter, so we try to recruit as many people as possible. We also work with the community by providing them with supplies or advice for their pets to keep them in their homes instead of having them come to the shelter.
Have you always had a passion for animals?
Yes! I used to bring animals home when I was like five years old and my mom would freak her out. Snakes, possums, you name it, I brought it in the house. I love all types of animals.
How long have you worked for League City and how did you start?
I’ve worked here for five years. I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, I’m a Louisiana girl. I graduated from LSU with a double major in animal science and business and then started working at a low-cost veterinarian in Baton Rouge. I later got a job offer at an emergency veterinarian care and I moved to the Houston area. I met my husband, who was my next door neighbor at the time. He works for League City as a Senior Operator in the Water Department and I wanted to go back into non-profit work by helping animals in need, so I decided to work for League City Pets Alive.
What do you love about your job?
I love it because I get to help animals in need and also give back to a community who helps their pets. I’m especially excited about our new shelter that’s under construction and I’m looking forward to a cleaner and bigger environment for the animals and our staff.
Hobbies outside of work?
For the past few months, I’ve been training for the Disney marathon in January. I run a total of 21 miles four times a week and I cross train with yoga or weight lifting once a week. I’ve never done it before but I saw a YouTube video by Michelle Khare that inspired me to do it and made me believe that I could. I’m excited but it’s exhausting, I started running only three miles and now I’m at 10 so that really motivates me.
Do you have pets?
I have 8 dogs, two cats, and a turtle. I have a really understanding and patient husband. I love them so much, they all came from the shelter. They all get along great including the turtle. The dogs are all named Dutchess, Hermione, Athena, Connor, Little Girl, Deacon, Sirius Black, and Lexie. The cats are Winston and Crookshanks and the turtle is Little Foot. A lot of them are named after Harry Potter characters.
