One of Senior Risk Analyst Jason Nunez’s responsibilities is to ensure all employees are safe on the job, but off the clock, you can always find this Navy veteran singing along at a live rock and roll concert. One of the biggest artists he’s seen perform? Elvis.
What do you do?
I am responsible for insurance, that means workers compensation, general liability, windstorm insurance, implementing our drug and alcohol policy program, and focusing on environmental health and safety. My responsibilities range from submitting claims in case of natural disasters to ensuring the wellness and safety of employees during day-to-day activities.
What do you like about your job?
I’m a people person and my overall goal is to make sure that everybody goes home and gets to see their loved ones at the end of the day. I enjoy taking care of folks and looking out for them every day.
What is your background?
I was in the U.S. Navy for 23 years as a hospital corpsman where I was solely responsible for every aspect of medical care for sailors and marines on ship and in garrison. I was stationed mostly out of California, but I’ve been deployed around the world. I’ve been to every continent except Antarctica. Since retiring, I’ve been doing health and safety for the last 8 years.
After traveling all over the world, what is your favorite place?
My favorite continent is Australia. People there are extremely nice, the weather was beautiful, and I got to go snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef.
Tell us about some awards/medals you received while in the Navy?
Some of the medals I received are the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Southwest Asia Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and National Defense Medal. I have them are all displayed in a shadowbox.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I’m very into music and like to go to a lot of concerts. I love rock and roll music, so I try to go to a show once a month with my wife or son. Right now, my favorite band is Greta Van Fleet. Some of the biggest shows that I’ve been to are Paul McCartney and Metallica. I try to go to Austin City Limits every year, and in September, I plan on watching Iron Madden, Greta Van Fleet, and Pat Benatar.
What has been one of your favorite shows?
I went to an Ice Cube show a few months ago at the House of Blues and I was very surprised about how much fun I had at that show; it’s been one of my favorites.
You also ride a motorcycle?
Yes, I’ve been riding daily since 2007. I like Harley Davidsons. I don’t consider myself a biker, but it’s like a lifestyle. I enjoy it. The feeling of being behind the handlebars with the wind in my hair and sun in my face is my happy place.
Interesting fact about yourself?
I saw Elvis Presley in concert at the Houston Astrodome in 1974.
I’ve been married for 31 years and I have two grown sons who are 28 and 26.
