League City Fire Department District Chief Daniel Gibbs likes to stay active. Whether he’s working on recruiting volunteer firefighters, coaching for his kid’s baseball team, boxing or managing a company, this Navy veteran is always on the go.
What do you do?
I’m one of two district chiefs for the Volunteer Fire Department. I’m responsible for the west side of League City, which includes stations 2, 4, and 5. I work with special operations, the dive team, hazmat, and public relations.
How long have you worked in League City?
I’ve been with the department for 17 years. I started as an orange hat, or probationary firefighter. When I joined, there wasn’t even a station in Bay Colony where I live, so we drove to the old station on Newport. I was promoted to District Chief seven years ago.
What’s your background?
After graduating high school, I joined the Navy and did aviation technology in Florida. When I came home, I went to school and waited tables. A few years later, a position opened at Skilled Craftsman of Texas as a recruiter, and I worked my way up to branch manager. I now own 75% percent of the company. Our main focus is finding and supplying industrial workers to Houston’s industrial sector. I’m also the owner of another company called Industry Edge, where we test individuals in their knowledge of assembly tools.
Favorite part about your job?
I really like special operations and public relations. I enjoy putting together events that bring the community out so they can learn more about our fire department, what we do and how we provide quality service, and hopefully, I get them to join our ranks. The smiles that you see on kids’ faces when they see you are priceless.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy coaching baseball, girls’ softball, basketball and for a long time, I coached martial arts.
I am an official licensed and trained USA Boxing Coach. I started coaching 15 years ago for my oldest daughter who is 20 years old and now in college. I now coach for my youngest son’s team.
You practice MMA?
I have a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I started when I was 7 years old, so I have 38 years of martial arts background. I got into boxing and Jiu-jitsu in 2003, then competed in amateur fights. My last boxing match was at Battle of the Badges when I was 40 years old.
I don’t compete anymore but I enjoy sparring with my youngest son and my wife.
Fun fact about yourself?
I am a huge sci-fi nerd. Star Trek is my favorite sci-fi show, I have seen every variation from the Original, Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9, Discovery, and can’t wait for PICARD. I am also a big Star Wars and Battlestar Galactic fan. I am married to a super hot wife, who is way outside of my league! She is my Penny and I am her Leonard! Big Bang reference (see, I am secretly a nerd!)
Three words to describe yourself:
Competitive, passionate and generous.
