A campaign to educate parents on cell phone use in school parking lots kicked off Monday, March 21st after weeks of planning between Parr Elementary School PTA parents, Clear Creek ISD school officials, and the League City Police Department Special Operations Division. While many parents are aware cell phone use in school zones is prohibited, many believe it is limited to roadways. Texas Transportation Code 545.4252 prohibits cell phone use while operating a motor vehicle on the property of a public elementary, middle, junior high, or high school during school zone times, unless the vehicle is stopped or the cell phone is used with a hands-free device. “Parr PTA identified health and safety as a focus for our students and parents this year. We observed people using their cell phones while in line waiting to drop off or pick up children. Many parents may not know that this is against the law, so we wanted to start by educating our campus,” stated Greta Mee, Parr PTA 2nd Vice President of Parent Education and Programs. The PTA worked with school officials to utilize notifications systems and PTA members will hand out fliers to drivers during dismissal. In addition, the school district is providing signage to be placed around the parking lot and electronic boards will be provided by the police department. “By collaborating with local parents and CCISD, we hope to educate our community and establish cooperation to ensure drivers are watching out for our kids- not distracted by their phones during school zone times,” said Sergeant Shawn Murray with League City Police Department Special Operation Division.
