The League City Animal Shelter is partnering with shelters throughout the area to give a loving animal a new lease on life at the annual Paws and Claws Adopt-a-thon Aug. 27 and 28.
The event, which is sponsored by the Friends of League City Animal Shelter, is set for Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hometown Heroes Park.
Shelters participating in the Paws and Claws Adopt-a-thon include League City, Galveston Island Humane Society, Pasadena, Webster, and Galveston County Animal Resource Center. Several rescue groups from throughout the area will also support the event.
Event organizers anticipate breaking previous records of adopting out 186 animals throughout the weekend.
“Shelters are busting at the seams with adoptable animals, particularly during the summer, when intake is the highest and adoptions are the lowest,” said Monica Millican, President of the Friends of League City Animal Shelter. “One hundred and eighty-six animals were adopted during last year’s event. We expect adoptions of to be around 300 animals this year with the longer event hours, a $25 adoption fee, and more animal availability.”
The adoption fee includes sterilization, a micro-chip, rabies vaccination, and other useful items. Additionally, approved adopters will be able to take their new friend home the same day.
Vaccination services to include heartworm tests, flea and animal meds will also be offered by Animal Alliance, a low-cost provider in Texas City.
The event features $5 micro-chipping, the Ring of Fire Cooking Team, beverages, baked treats, vendors, and cute, fury friends for all to love. Other activities include face painting, K-9 demonstrations from the League City Police Department, League City Volunteer Fire Department, and a silent auction.
