Citizens are invited to attend the May 18, 2017 Historic Commission meeting in Council Chambers (200 W. Walker St.) at 6 p.m. to discuss proposed design standards related to continued development of the downtown area.
To continue the efforts that began just over a year ago, the City's Historic Commission will review, discuss, and possibly recommend design standards for new development in the downtown area; Citizens are invited to come and take part in the discussion regarding the redevelopment of our downtown.
With the assistance of Gateway Planning, a firm with expertise in downtown initiatives, design standards have been proposed for the area to guide new development and redevelopment. Further public consideration of the proposed design standards is planned during meetings of the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council over the next few months at dates and times yet to be determined.
A proposal to enhance League City's downtown area was presented to City Council and the public on May 10, 2016. The redevelopment area is generally along FM-518 (Main Street) from State Highway 3 on the west to Iowa Ave. on the east, and along Park Ave. from East Wilkins St. on the south to just north of 3rd St. The proposal featured illustrated design concepts, renderings of a revitalized downtown, and other unique amenities to enhance the area. It also defined a viable and vibrant traditional downtown with a village appeal that captures the look and heritage of Historic League City.
Efforts for the downtown area build upon the City's rich history and amenities already in place including protection of the Butler Oaks, preservation of the history in the downtown area, and additional parking for downtown area patrons. The efforts also intend to further facilitate the area as a community gathering spot, promote a pedestrian friendly environment, and further the connection amongst residents and business owners.
