On July 23, 2017, League City resident Clarence James Humphrey was shot and killed in a failed robbery attempt that occurred in front of the League City house where he was staying. The four males suspected in the shooting left the scene before police arrived. While processing the scene, evidence technicians collected and then submitted several critical pieces of evidence to the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab.
Results from the DNA evidence collected place 30-year-old John Wells of Houston at the scene of the crime at the time of the shooting. On April 24, 2018, a 1st Degree Murder warrant was issued for Wells. On May 22, 2018, Wells was served with the warrant inside the Harris County Jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges.The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office set Wells’ bond at $300,000
