League City Traffic Signal Box Public Art Project

Submissions NOW Being Accepted

The League City Public Art Initiative is requesting design submissions for its Traffic Signal Box Wrap Contest. Amateur and professional artists of all ages are encouraged to create and submit a design to be digitally printed on vinyl and wrapped on a traffic signal box located within the city limits of League City. This project will brighten city streetscapes, enhance community pride, and provide opportunities for local artists to showcase their creativity.

Theme

“League City’s Natural Assets” is the theme for the contest and is purposely very broad to allow for open interpretation and creativity to make a lasting impression on residents and visitors to League City. Successful submissions will do one of the following:

• Depict the natural environment of our city including but not limited to animals, insects, butterflies, wildflowers, landscapes, waterways, oak trees, etc. 
• Depict an activity or activities that can be enjoyed in League City’s parks, trails, waterways, and open spaces including but not limited to kayaking, fishing, sailing, birdwatching, etc.
• Celebrate the history of League City and the role the landscape and environment played in bringing settlers and residents to our community: Ex: cattle ranching, railroad, NASA, etc.  

Eligibility

This opportunity is limited to League City residents and amateur or professional artists of all ages living or working within a 25-mile radius of League City. Public and private school students, community college and UH-Clear Lake students, amateur artists, professional artists, photographers, and graphic designers are all encouraged to submit designs. 

Guidelines 

• All submissions must be provided digitally.
• Submitted designs must be original artwork, graphic design, photography, etc., and may be a new, original piece or an existing work of the artist, but it may not be on display in other public art programs. This does not include a previous or ongoing gallery exhibition.
• The design may be representational or abstract but cannot include any trademarks, brands, advertisements, religious art, sexual content, negative imagery, or convey political partisanship.
• The design should include little to no print, as it is distracting to drivers.
• Due to the heat sensitivity of the electronics contained within the utility boxes, artists are discouraged from using very dark color palettes in their designs.
• When submitting a design, artists should consider how it will display on a traffic signal box. (see example traffic boxes at the bottom of the page)
• Designs can be laid out and configured to fit the sides of a traffic box. League City has two types of traffic boxes. (see below for pictures and dimensions)
• Designs can be a drawing, painting, textile, photography, etc. that is able to be digitally scanned, converted into a high-resolution file, and then printed on vinyl. 
• Artists may submit up to two designs for consideration. Artists may include one work per application, for a total of up to two applications per individual.
• Each selected artist will be required to sign an artist contract committing to finalize their concept based on the assigned traffic box and to agree to work with the city and third-party vendor on sizing and final format, submission of required high-definition art file or providing artwork to be scanned and printed digitally.

*If these requirements are not followed, the design will be automatically disqualified from consideration.
